Ombudsman Christopher Hamer has revealed increasing sales complaints against estate agents in recent months. The majority of these complaints relate to allegations either from sellers claiming that they have been asked to pay for a Home Information Pack when the property has not yet been sold, or from home owners who have become liable to dual fees after switching agents during a slow market.
A recent Which? Report highlighted that Estate agents are levying mark-ups on the cost of Home Information Packs which are adding hundreds of pounds to the cost of selling a home. A leading estate agent figure responded to this, commenting:
“The research doesn’t show the full picture. The majority of the lower cost or free Home Information Pack providers add on fees elsewhere, for example, making it a condition of purchase that you use their conveyancing services for which they charge a higher price”
Though this is an Interesting point ‘Mr Agent’, at least sellers do not have to pay for the conveyancing if they do not find a buyer for their property!
