There are more than 600,000 empty homes across England with a third of those properties vacant for more than six months.

In a study by online property marketers Good Move, Liverpool was revealed to be the city with the most vacant homes in England, 10,512 along in 2017, which accounts for 4.70 percent of all property in the city.

Liverpool City Council has attempted to reduce the number of empty properties by setting up a matchmaking service that brings buyers and the sellers of empty homes together.

North-west has most empty homes

Meanwhile, Birmingham also has more than 10,000 vacant homes, its total of 10,386 accounting for 17 percent of the total number of empty properties across the West Midlands and for 2.40 percent of all housing stock in the city.

Leeds has 10,236 vacant homes, 3.0 percent of its housing stock; next is Durham with 10,026 vacant homes in 2017 or 4.20 percent of its housing stock; and Bradford comes in at No.5 on the list of cities with the highest number of empty homes, its 8,751 vacant properties accounting for 4.10 percent of all housing in the city.

The Good Move figures reveal that the north-west of England has the most empty houses, followed by the south-east where, despite huge demand for property, there are more than 86,000 vacant properties.
