Homeowners who buy a new-build property are to get the protection of a new homes ombudsman behind them. The Government has announced the creation of the watchdog to protect the interests of new-build buyers and ensure developers are held to account when there are problems.
To ensure developers fall into line with the new regime, the Government says it will introduce legislation requiring that builders belong to the ombudsman.
Seek redress for any issues
In its announcement, the Ministry of Housing said: “House buyers should be confident that when they purchase a new home, they get the quality of build and finish they expected. We will work with consumers and industry to develop our proposals.”
Until the new laws are in place, the Government says it expects industry to improve the current arrangements that allow new-build owners to seek redress for any issues. It also wants the construction industry to improve the consistency of quality for new-build homes.
Better housing market for all
The Property Ombudsman who currently offers conflict resolution to homeowners, renters, landlords and property agents withdrew from covering the new-build sector in August.
However, following the release of a report last month from NAEA Propertymark that revealed 94 percent of leasehold property owners regretted buying a new-build on that tenure, Property Ombudsman Katrine Sporle said “a better housing market for all” is essential.
