How much will I pay in council tax in North-East London?

Each local authority sets council tax rates for its borough. All residential property is in one of eight bands depending on its valuation.

Check which band your chosen property is in on the government's valuation website.

What types of property are available in North-East London?

The biggest residential area of Waltham Forest is Walthamstow. Property here ranges from late Victorian and Edwardian detached, semi-detached and terraces, along with purpose-built flats known as “Warner” flats. These are terraced with two front doors and each flat has its own garden. Waltham Forest has, in common with the rest of London, seen an uptick in the number of new apartment blocks.

Redbridge has several excellent benefits, one being its proximity to Epping Forest. This borough has a large number of 1930-style bungalows on its property roster, some larger semi-detached homes from the same decade and several very leafy suburbs.

In neighbouring Havering, the biggest town is Romford with bungalows one of the most popular property types. Victorian terraces are naturally well represented in the Havering property roster, along with inter-war detached and semi-detached homes.

What are schools like in North-East London?

In Waltham Forest, 16 schools are rated as outstanding by Ofsted. The regulator has given the outstanding rating to 13 schools in Havering. In Redbridge, 29 schools are rated as outstanding.

You can check the rating of your chosen school on the government's school comparison website.

Are there conservation areas in North-East London property buyers should be aware of?

The capital has a long and illustrious history, which means there are many areas that still have important architectural or historic significance. Conservation areas have been established to protect this heritage, and strict planning rules apply to all land and property within that area.

Waltham Forest has 14 conservation areas, including Chingford Green and Walthamstow Village.

In Havering, there are 11 conservation areas, including the Second World War site at RAF Hornchurch.

Redbridge has 16 conservation areas, which include the original Barnardo's village.

If you buy within a conservation area, your North-East London conveyancing solicitor will ask for a local authority search to identify any potential issues around planning.

Did you know?

The classic London Routemaster bus was born in Walthamstow. The London Motor Omnibus Company was founded in the town in 1905 and made the iconic red buses until 1979.

Havering is one of London's greenest and least built-up borough. Half of the borough is on green belt land, meaning it cannot be built on, and there are three country parks - Havering, Hornchurch and Bedfords.

Redbridge takes its name, unsurprisingly, from the red bridge that once crossed the River Roding.
