London’s expensive housing market means many of those working in the capital are looking ever further afield for the most affordable and do-able commute.
According to Zoopla, the average price of a home in London is £659,897 with those in the wider south-east standing at £401,883.
Those prices often put London houses and flats beyond the reach of many of those who work in the city.
They then have to look at places further afield that offer a reasonable commute and more affordable prices.
Nottingham most affordable
Using Zoopla’s commuting calculator, The Sun has revealed that the cheapest place for London commuters to buy is the Midlands city of Nottingham, less than two hours away from the capital by train.
In Nottingham, the average property costs around £207,000. Even adding the cost of a train commute on to mortgage repayments makes Nottingham more affordable to buy in than London for those who work in the capital.
The next cheapest place for a commute is Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, an hour by train from King’s Cross and where the average home will cost just under £232,000.
Other factors to consider
Other affordable commutes include Leicester, 90 minutes from London and with homes costing on average £237,000; Milton Keynes in Northamptonshire, only 60 miles from London and where the average home costs £305,000 according to Zoopla; Worthing in West Sussex where a home will cost an average £330,000 and the travel time to the capital is around 90 minutes; and Bristol, an hour and 45 minutes by train away and with homes costing £333,000.
Zoopla’s Annabel Dixon told The Sun: “As always the devil is in the detail, and it’s not just the availability of homes for sale and average house prices that count.
“First-time buyers need to factor in the cost of a season ticket as well as the logistics of a longer journey around things like family.”
