Manchester Conveyancing solicitors Wolstenholmes ( who also practice as Best Conveyancing ) , which opened in 1818, is being investigated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). Here is the story on a Manchester news web site.
The Legal Complaints Commission (LCC) is dealing with 116 complaints from customers who say they have lost money. In a statement it said it intervened on December 24 and 27, adding: "The grounds for the intervention were suspected dishonesty and breaches of the Solicitors Accounts and Practice Rules."
Many of the complaints are from customers who have been using the firms Conveyancing Services
BBC Radio Manchester has learnt that all sales which were due to go ahead shortly before the festive period have been frozen as the SRA intervenes.
This is no doubt a devastating situation for many buyers and sellers. It also comes at a time when the Stamp Duty holiday expires at the end of the year meaning that many buyers, even if they there file is taken over then they will missed out on a maximum of £1750 worth of Stamp Duty.
An SRA spokesman said "For those who fear they have lost money, it will be dealt with by the solicitors indemnity insurance or the SRA Compensation Fund." This is of course little comfort to those seller’s and buyers who feel abandoned.
