Wills usually have bequests to family members. A judge must ensure that the will contains the last wishes of the deceased. ‘Proving’ the will is called probate. Before 1858, the executor or executrix registered the will in the relevant ecclesiastical court. Up to 1858, will registers for the Prerogatives Courts of Canterbury are at The National Archives and those for York are at the Borthwick Institute, York. After 1858 all wills were registered at a Central Court of Probate.

Now they are registered at the Principal Probate Registry. You can get copies of wills from the Principal Probate Registry, London. Wills registered in local diocesan courts are at the relevant county or diocesan record office. There is no Islington Probate  Registry.

Wills can help you find names of relatives and friends of the deceased and determine their relationships, but some people may be omitted from a will.
