Southampton City Council (Civic Centre, Southampton, SO14 7LY) in partnership with the Sustainable Energy and the city’s Environment Centre are coming together to provide affordable insulation for home owners to combat the rising prices for domestic energy.

British Gas announced, in July 2011, that it would be increasing gas prices by 18 percent (an increase likely to take effect with other gas companies as well). In an attempt to assist home owners, the local authority is offering improved insulation grants for the installation of loft or cavity wall insulation to be professionally installed for only £69.

So, insulating your cavity walls will help you to heat your home more efficiently. Using less energy reduces carbon dioxide emissions (CO2): one of the biggest causes of climate change. The average savings based on insulating a gas-heated, semi-detached home with three bedrooms would be around £110 per year. Savings from loft insulation range from £45 for a top up to £150 when there is no existing insulation.

The council’s grant is being managed exclusively by Cocoon. Funds are limited and are offered on a first-come first-served basis.

Homeowners aged 70 or over or who receive certain benefits may get the work done free of charge. Those who take up the offer can choose one of a number of approved local installers to carry out a no-obligation survey.
