First-time buyer opportunities in Birmingham

Two new housing developments in Birmingham are creating more opportunities for first-time buyers to get a foot on the housing ladder. Both have been created from former commercial premises, and are a good example of how creative redevelopment can provide affordable homes.

The Phoenix estate has arisen on the grounds of the former Firebird pub, off Pershore Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, and the area previously known as the Benmore estate. 78 new homes have been constructed in a joint venture between Central Birmingham-based Optima Housing Association, Birmingham City Council and the Government’s Homes and Communities Agency. The new homes come with solar panels, increased insulation and energy efficient boilers to reduce fuel costs.

Purchasers will be able to buy on a shared-ownership scheme, and prices range from £72, 500 for a half share for a two-bedroom house to £79, 975 for a three-bedroom property. The scheme enables owners to increase their share in the property until they own it outright.

Regeneration near Birmingham City Centre

A £25 million regeneration scheme at Crocodile Works in Alma Street, Newtown, Birmingham has created 126 apartments and 42 townhouses which are available for rent, outright sale and rent to home buy. These contemporary apartments and townhouses which are only minutes from Birmingham City Centre have been developed on a former factory site and are part of a flagship scheme by Midland Heart to breathe new life into this part of Birmingham.

Midland Heart is the largest housing and regeneration group based in the Midlands, and this development is an excellent example of their work in creating affordable properties.

Shared ownership and other similar schemes are one way of enabling would-be home owners to purchase at a reasonable price, and developments of this type provide a welcome provision of new dwellings in the city. Conveyancing Solicitors in Birmingham will face the more complex challenge of transacting these ex-industrial conversions, but an experienced local Solicitor will nevertheless still be able to deliver Fast and Cheap Conveyancing according to their clients' needs.
