There has never been any central record of all mines, so it can be difficult to find comprehensive information about mining activity in or near Carmarthenshire. Official searches provide insurance cover for a house, protecting against a loss of value up to fifty thousand pounds. Coal is now often worked by the opencast method. This involves removal of soil and 'overburden' above the coal, which is then removed with heavy excavators. Large-scale opencast workings can impact on nearby property during operation, but the long-term consequences and impact on the environment may be generally less. Should a search reveal former mining activity in close proximity then a further survey may be required.

Disadvantaged Areas in Carmarthenshire
