Gosport's local leaders have reacted with pleasure to the recent announcement that the HMS Daedelus site has been chosen as one of the new enterprise zones just announced by the Government.
This is the first such zone to be created in the south, and means that businesses in the area can now benefit from discounts on business rates, lower levels of planning control and the potential to use enhanced capital allowances.
The airfield played an important part in the development of naval aviation base from 1917, but was 'paid off' by the navy in 1996. It has recently been earmarked for marine, aviation and aerospace use in the Local Plan, and the designation as an enterprise zone will help to create more local jobs in the Gosport area.
The News, Portsmouth's local paper, quotes Gosport Borough Council leader, Councillor Mark Hook, as saying: ‘We are pleased the government recognises the massive opportunity there is on the Daedalus site. We recognise the need to create jobs on the peninsula and we are delighted the government has sat up and taken notice. This is just the beginning.’
Business Secretary, Vince Cable, said: “Enterprise Zones are creating an environment for businesses to grow in places with the most potential. Those the government is announcing today ... show the range of ambitious plans in place across the country.”
With the closure of various naval establishments in Gosport more residents now have to work outside the area, so anything which will lead to an increase in the number of local jobs available must be welcomed. It should also give a boost to the local housing market.
